Google is testing an “official site” box at the top of AI answers. Here is how to make your website obviously official.
Google’s October 15 update to AI Mode and AI Overviews did two things that matter to a business website: it moved links higher inside the answer, and it started testing a box at the top that points to the official site for the thing being asked about. Being that site is now a design goal.
Google announced on October 15, 2026 that AI Mode and AI Overviews show more inline links placed higher in the answer, and that it is testing an “official sites” box at the top of answers alongside expanded news and end-of-answer link cards. A website reads as official when its name, address, phone and ownership are stated plainly and match everywhere else Google can check: the Google Business Profile, structured data, the About page, social profiles and directories. For a Denver business that means a real About page, consistent facts, an Organization schema with sameAs links, and no ambiguity about who runs the site.
What Google changed on October 15
The announcement on Google’s product blog, titled around helping people explore the web from AI Mode and AI Overviews, lists four changes: more inline links, placed higher in the answer; a test of an “official sites” box at the top of answers for queries about a specific business, product or organization; expanded news carousels tied to Preferred Sources, which Google says have grown more than sevenfold since the start of the year; and link cards with thumbnails at the end of answers.
Read as a business owner, the message is: the AI answer is becoming a page with a front door, and Google wants the front door to be the real one. That is good news for any business whose site is clearly, verifiably its own, and bad news for the lead-generation sites that rank for your name.
What “official” means to a machine
Google has never published the formula, but its own documentation points at the inputs. The structured-data guidance for Organization markup describes sameAs links to your other profiles and a logo. The AI optimization guide says a complete Google Business Profile helps your products and services show in AI responses. And the Search Central changelog this year added a search profile badge for verified entities. Put together, a site reads as official when:
- The facts agree everywhereBusiness name, address, phone and hours on the site match the Google Business Profile, the structured data, and the major directories. Disagreement reads as uncertainty.
- The site says who runs itA real About page with the owner’s name, the founding year, the location and a photo. A site with no humans on it is hard to call anyone’s official site.
- The profiles point backYour Google Business Profile, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram all list this domain as the website, and the site’s Organization schema lists them under sameAs.
- The domain is the brandOr close to it. A business called Front Range Plumbing at frontrangeplumbing.com reads as official; the same business at best-denver-plumbers-247.com does not.
The design decisions that follow
A footer that states the facts
Legal name, street address, phone, hours, and the year founded, in plain text on every page. Not an image, not a map embed alone. Google reads text; so do the other systems that decide who you are.
An About page that is actually about you
Owner’s name and role, a photo, the story in two paragraphs, licenses and certifications with numbers, the office. This is also the page assistants quote when a customer asks “who is this company.” Ours is the most-read page on several client sites.
One Organization block of structured data
Name, legalName, url, logo, telephone, address, founder, foundingDate, and sameAs pointing at every real profile. One block, referenced by every page, not five different versions emitted by five plugins. The engineering side of this is on our development property, LLM SEO, engineered.
Consistent branding on the profiles
Same logo, same name spelling, same tagline on Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Yelp. A machine matching entities across sites uses these the way a person does.
No ambiguity in the name
If the business is “Smith & Sons Roofing” on the license and “Smith Roofing Denver” on the website and “Smith and Sons” on Google, pick one and fix the others. The official-site box has to decide which site belongs to which name; make it easy.
Why this matters more than the click
Most of the attention on AI answers is about lost clicks, and the data is real: Ahrefs measured a 58% lower click-through for the top organic result when an AI Overview is present. But Seer Interactive’s 2026 data shows a cited page still earns about twice the clicks per impression of an uncited one, and an official-site box at the top is the most prominent citation there is. The business that is unmistakably itself gets the box. The business whose name is split across three spellings and whose website has no About page gets a lead-gen directory in the box instead, and pays that directory for its own customers.
If you are planning a new site, the small business web design page explains how we build the About page and the facts block into every project; if you have a site already, the website checklist has the items above as a ten-minute check.

Common questions
What is Google's "official sites" box?
A feature Google said on October 15, 2026 it is testing in AI Mode and AI Overviews: a box at the top of an answer that points to the official website of the business, product or organization the person asked about.
How does Google decide which site is official?
Google has not published a formula. Its documentation points to consistent business facts across the site, the Google Business Profile and directories, Organization structured data with sameAs links to real profiles, and verified entity signals. Make the facts agree everywhere and say who runs the site.
Does my Google Business Profile affect the official-site box?
Google's AI guidance says a complete Business Profile helps your business appear in AI responses, and the profile lists your website. Keep the website field correct and the profile facts identical to the site.
Will this bring back the clicks AI answers took?
Not all of them. Ahrefs measured a 58% drop in top-result click-through when an AI Overview appears. But cited pages earn about twice the clicks per impression of uncited ones (Seer Interactive, 2026), and an official-site box is the most prominent citation available.
